It’s March 1 ladies and gentlemen, and you know what that means right? National Pig Day! National Pig Day was created by two sisters, Ellen Stanley and Mary Lynne Rave, in 1972. This unofficial holiday strives to celebrate the existence of pigs, and bring more awareness to the species high level of intelligence, for it often goes unrecognized.

In some cultures, pigs are symbols of wealth, prosperity, and luck. During a holiday like this like this one, people often celebrate pigs by going to their local farm or zoo, playing with their own pet pigs, studying a pig’s habits and natures, making pig themed crafts, or even something as simple as wearing the color pink!

“I hope to spend most of my time playing with my pig Penelope,” senior Bayleigh Ivan said. “She really brings joy to my heart, and on a day like this I can really appreciate her for being the special little pig she is.”

It’s also important to note that pigs come in all shapes and sizes, and different colors too! Pigs come in any shade between brown and black and oddly enough pink! Fun fact, pigs are pink because they lack melanin, so the capillaries carrying blood to the skin show through, leaving a pinkish look!

It’s time to toss the dirty stereotype for pigs, and usher in a new reputation! Instead of thinking how gross they can be, think about how cute and smart pigs are! So get out and celebrate a pig today!
